A role-playing story game featuring Penny Arcade comic characters

Penny Arcade Adventures (Precipice of Darkness) is a RPG game with turn-based combat, slight horror elements comedy, and mystery solving. The transition from 2D drawings to 3D characters is tactfully done, which is in stark contrast to other examples such as the early South Park and Simpsons console games. Sadly, the game is the first part of a series and the series was never finished, so it is not a game suitable for completionist players.

PROS

  • Transition from 2D to 3D is tactfully done
  • Offers plenty of fan service lovers of the comic
  • The power attacks add depth to the fighting
  • 3 out of 10 jokes are laugh-out-loud funny

CONS

  • The overall story is unfinished
  • Marketed as a horror despite not being scary
  • Mysteries are too easy because the answers are overly telegraphed
  • Comedy is too esoteric for non Penny Arcade fans
